ON THE CANVAS NOW He Was the Son of God
by Liz Lemon Swindle
He was the Son of God
January 13, 2009
Today is my birthday. I am 56 years old. What a great place to spend my birthday, in my studio, painting my Savior.
I prepared the canvas, laid a verdaccio down and hopefully it will be dry tomorrow so that I can pencil in the Savior’s image.
We shot this on Friday, two days after our planning meeting for 2009. The idea came to me with the help of all those in the meeting to create a companion piece to “When did He Know?” The title for what will be a diptych of these two pieces will be: “When Did He Know…He was the Son of God.”
I am excited to do this piece because I love to paint the face of the Savior. When this project began in 2000, I approached painting the Savior far differently than I do today. Not only do I search my thoughts and my heart more deeply to know the Lord’s will in this respect, I feel the weight of the responsibility to listen to the Spirit as he directs me in this process.
Presenting images of the Savior to the world carries an enormous responsibility and I have gained a healthy respect for this position.
Countless people will place in their mind these images of the Savior. I better be listening!
