History of Come and See
by Liz Lemon Swindle

Aug. 15, 2008

Another long day, but productive and rewarding. It’s fun to be in these finishing stages. I get excited when I can more clearly see the end results.

I made great progress on hands and faces today. I paid particular attention to the apostle on the end (painting’s left). David Molling has played Andrew for the last 5 years and then in November, I had him play Peter. I like the idea of Peter next to Jesus, but I haven’t painted David in that role on this painting. I guess it doesn’t matter. I’m sure they didn’t have a designated spot in the lineup as far as traveling goes.

I am sitting here in my studio with only the spot lights on the painting. I’m so grateful for those quiet moments when the spirit bears witness.

Well – the painting leaves Monday morning for a show. It is not finished, but it’s very good and I believe its impact will be effective. I did my best to finish it and fell short, but I’m okay with that.

I’ll be able to relax when it comes back in a week and finish it. It’s everything I imagined from the beginning and I am so excited to see it finished. I’ll take my time and this piece will sing.

I’ve learned so many things painting this; technically and spiritually and I will hold this work dear and always feel gratitude for this experience.

Finally, I’m back! Last week I was involved in Education Week and that was a lot of fun. I enjoy meeting the people who appreciate this work. I have to say that I enjoy painting a lot more. I’m at home in front of an easel and smelling the turpentine and oils. Truthfully, I’m a bit shy, so it’s comfortable to be by myself all day. To those of you I met at Education Week, I had a great time! Today I worked on Nathaniel Bartholomew. I like his face. He is played by a good friend, Jeff Simpson, who lives in my neighborhood and is a good friend!

I love painting faces and hands. To me, the story is in the body language of the characters. Certainly, Nathaniel is enjoying the story.
